3 Groups, 1 Day, 45 Dog Houses!

We did it!!! On July 6th passionate volunteers from Lakes Animal Friendship Society (LAFS), Northwest Animal Shelter Society (NWAS) and Vet to Pet Mobile Veterinary Services made a RECORD 45 all-weather dog and cat houses in a SINGLE DAY! Actually, it was 7.5 hours… including coffee breaks!

After building 45 “Hofer houses” and posing for a brief photo and video session to celebrate the achievement, we took the houses apart and made them into flat pack kits so they can be transported to animals in need across Northwest BC.

Vet to Pet Mobile will soon be taking some kits to Witset (formerly Moricetown) as part of a veterinary outreach visit. Others will go with Vet to Pet in their travels to underserved communities across the region. Northwest Animal Shelter Society will hang onto kits for animals in their service area which runs from Kitwanga to Houston. LAFS brought twenty kits back for animals in the Lakes District and surrounding communities. We keep working toward having ALL animals in the home with their families, but until then we will do our best to keep animals safe and protected from the weather when outdoors.

Big thanks to Dr. Kim Hunter from Vet to Pet and Sara from NWAS for organizing and hosting the event in Smithers. We were grateful that you even provided amazing vegan-friendly food for the volunteers! Thanks also to the rest of the builders and helpers: Rose, Wayne, Daniel, Jean, Katie, Joelle, Jerry, Julie, Richard and Justin – a hot July day during Midsummer Festival and you chose to spend time to help the critters!

Thanks also to Smithers Lumber Yard for the generous discount on materials and saving us time by delivering to the site, and also to the Options Program in Burns Lake and Julie Hodson from Vanderhoof for donating woodworking equipment for the dog house project!
